What is British Standard?

What is British Standard?

We’re asked about British Standard almost every day, usually because of home and contents insurance. In short, British Standards are documents produced by the British Standards Institution (BSI) that set out minimum requirements a product must meet.

Why it matters for locks

For locks, the key standard is BS3621, which tests resistance to picking, drilling, forcing and other attacks. Most UK insurers require BS3621 locks — or an equivalent — on final exit doors.

How to tell

A British Standard lock is stamped with the BSI kitemark and the standard number on the faceplate. If you can’t see one, it probably isn’t compliant.
