A euro cylinder (also called a profile cylinder) is the key-operated barrel found on most uPVC, composite and aluminium doors. Turning the key rotates a cam that operates the lock or multipoint mechanism.

Types

Double cylinder – key on both sides.
Thumb-turn – key outside, turn inside, so you can always get out (recommended for fire safety in flats and rentals).
Half cylinder – key on one side only, e.g. garage doors.

Security

Standard cylinders can be vulnerable to snapping. Choose an anti-snap cylinder rated TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond. Cylinders are measured from the centre of the fixing screw to each end, so it’s important to fit the right size.
